Obituary for Wilma Jean Walker

Wilma Jean Murray was born in Bethel, Kansas June 30, 1932. Her parents were Margaret & Theodore Murray. Wilma had two older brothers, Robert & Donald and a younger sister, Winona. Wilma’s early childhood was tumultuous. When she was about 4, her parents divorced which resulted in the family being split up. Her father was awarded custody of the boys, the girls’ custody to their mother. All of the children were placed in various foster and/or children’s homes. When Wilma was about 8 or 9, she was sent to live with her maternal grandfather in Oakland, Missouri settling in Joplin, Missouri about a year later when her sister Nona joined them.
Wilma & Ramon first met in 1947 while both were still in high school. Their first date was February 14, 1948; they were married May 10, 1952. Wilma & Ramon celebrated their 65th anniversary in 2017! The early years of their marriage saw many moves due to Ramon’s military service and new career. There are many tales of the adventures of a young family with lots of ornery children, the family being far away from other family & friends with little money or assistance but lots of love. After moving from Pensacola, Florida, to Memphis, Tennessee, to Washington, D.C. to Endicott, New York to Tulsa & McAlister, Oklahoma, the family finally settled in Denver, Colorado in 1967.
As the children grew, Wilma entered the workforce in various businesses, usually as a receptionist. She excelled in helping people, getting to know them & generally making their day a little brighter. Wilma had a beautiful smile that she shared with everyone. She was a devoted Christian, relying on her faith to help her through her many medical trials & tribulations.
Wilma was known to many as “The Card Lady”. She delighted in making people smile by sending cards specifically chosen for the recipient. Wilma was proud of her amazing memory, being able to recall names, dates, phone numbers and other personal information easily. Once you were in her “database” you could be sure to be remembered on your birthday at least. In addition to her family, Wilma loved milk chocolate, cats, red carnations and listening to Frank Sinatra music.
Wilma is survived by her devoted husband Ramon; children Michael (Doris); Thomas (Danette); Kenneth (Denise); Martha Nethery (Richard); Matthew (Crystal); brother Donald Murray (Billie); sister Nona Light; sister-in-law Kathryn Huelster (Richard); brother-in-law Gary (Ruth); grandchildren Monica, Christopher, Sheila Farneth (Don); Sherri McDaniel (Scott); Richard Nethery, Jr. (Jennifer); great grandchildren Malcolm, Luke, Sam, Daniel, Joe, Micaela, Malia; nephews Anthony Huelster (Andrea) and Kevin Huelster (Katherine Kamen); great-nephew Beau Huelster (Heather); great-niece Ingrid Pickett (Ferlando); great-niece Emily Huelster and many, many dear friends. We will all miss her smiles, hugs and love but are thankful she is no longer in any pain and home forever.
