Obituary for William Hurd

William (Bill) Allen Hurd passed away peacefully December 1 in Highlands Ranch, CO where he had lived at Wind Crest Retirement Community since 2010.

Interment, including Armed Service honors, will be January 14 at 12:15 pm, followed by funeral services at 1:00 pm, Quebec Center, Fairmount Cemetery, Denver.

Born May 8, 1925 in Boston, MA, Bill grew up in nearby Brookline through grammar school. He later moved with his family to Northampton, MA where he lived until high school graduation in 1943.

Immediately thereafter he was inducted into the U. S. Army during WW II. There he served in active combat in France and Germany from 1943 until the war ended in 1945.
After his Army service which included 4 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart, Bill moved to Colorado to attend Denver University. There he met and married his wife Gwen in 1947. In 1948 he earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree and in 1953 a Master’s of Arts degree, both in Education. He served as a teacher and counselor for the Denver Public Schools and the University of Colorado from 1948-1983.

Bill, a life-long tennis expert, after moving to Colorado also became an expert skier. On weekends he served as a member of the National Ski Patrol at Winter Park Ski Resort. He served on active patrol and instructed Avalanche, Safety, and Survival training for over 25 years.

After retiring from teaching, he focused on his tennis game to achieve the Highlands Ranch Senior Tennis League Championship in 1995, and the Colorado Doubles Senior Men’s Championship in 1996.

Bill is preceded in death by son Bruce in 2007, and wife Gwen in 2015. He is survived by daughter Cindy, Lakewood, CO; son Steve (Lauri) of Highlands Ranch; daughter-in-law Celeste, Denver; grandchildren Adrienne, Will (Victoria), Denver; Lani, Western Europe; Logan, New York City; sister Helen Pirtle and niece Leslie Pirtle, both of Dennis, MA.
